What it means to have Jesus in your heart

The Purpose of Jesus’ Life, Being Born Again, and Eternal Life:

What it means to have Jesus in your heart

The Bible tells us a story about Jesus’ birth and his death upon the cross. But why was he born and why did he die on a cross? What was the purpose of Jesus’ life? How do we get to heaven? Why should I believe in God?
(Learn more about who God is here.)

Jesus wants our hearts and for us to live for him and him only. The problem is that there is evil in this world. The enemy is hard at work trying to keep us from accepting Jesus. The enemy wants us to believe that God isn’t the truth and that Jesus isn’t the way to heaven. The enemy wants us to believe that there are many ways to heaven, not just through Jesus. Many people believe that you can get to heaven just by good works or being a good person. Then, there are others who believe in tolerance of others beliefs and that there are multiple ways to heaven. Most atheists don’t believe in heaven or the afterlife.
But, what is the TRUTH?

Jesus was born for the very purpose of dying on the cross for our sins. (Matthew 1:21). As long as we give our life to him, live for him, and believe in him we will have eternal life with him. The purpose of Jesus’ life was to teach about the kingdom of God and to tell people to repent for the kingdom of God is near.
You Must Be Born Again

John chapter 3 (ESV)
You need to have Jesus in your heart to see the kingdom of God1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, Truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Jesus was explaining to the man that you have to be born again in order to go to heaven. The man thought that Jesus was saying that you have to be born again from your mother. But, what Jesus meant was that you need to accept the Lord as your Savior. You need to have Jesus in your heart to see the kingdom of God. Christ makes all things new! He has forgiven our sins and we have a new slate.

9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, Truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

Whoever believes in God will have eternal life. Before this only Jesus was able to descend from heaven and ascend into heaven. But now, those who believe are able to ascend into heaven.

Acts: 16:31- And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

For God So Loved the World

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

God loves us so much that he sacrificed his only son, Jesus, so that people who believe in him won’t go to hell but they will go to heaven and live forever. Jesus was beaten with whips and pierced in his side while he was on the cross. The pain he went through on the cross is greater than any pain anyone on earth could bear. He died on the cross to forgive us of our sins.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

God wanted things to change so that we weren’t punished and condemned. He wanted people to have a chance to be saved. He wants people to make the decision to follow him, he won’t force anyone to believe in him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Whoever doesn’t believe will be condemned and will go to hell. Those who believe won’t be condemned.

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Jesus has come into the world, people loved darkness (evil ways) rather than light (Jesus) because their works were evil. People like evil things, it’s easier to like evil than it is to like goodness and wholesome things. It’s easier to live like the world than it is to go against the world and live for Jesus.

21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

God sees our works, he sees if we are living in the light or in the darkness, he sees if our works are carried out in God.

25 Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Jesus began to baptize people and everyone went to him to get baptized. John let his disciples know that he wasn’t the Christ and that he was just sent before Jesus to baptize people in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus must increase and we must decrease to be filled with the Holy Spirit. If we are filled with ourselves we can’t be filled with the Spirit.

31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.

God is above all. God is above humans, angels, all other gods, any and everything. That is why he is an amazing God. No one can compare.

32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Those who receive his testimony and believe in the Son of God will have eternal life

We need to receive the testimony that God is true. Those who receive his testimony and believe in the Son of God will have eternal life, they will be saved. Those who don’t accept his testimony, don’t believe that God is true and don’t believe in the Son won’t have eternal life and will go to hell.

What happens when we accept Jesus as our Savior?

1.     When we are saved we become a child of God. We belong to God. (John1:12).
2.     We are a new creation. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17

What Next?

After we accept Jesus as our savior we should do the following:
1.     Find a church to attend that preaches from the Word of God, that teaches biblical truth, and focus on God’s love, grace, and mercy.
2.     Get baptized. Getting baptized is proclaiming that we are saved and not afraid to tell the world that we gave your life to Christ and that we will live your life for Christ. It is an act of obedience and we should be offering up repentance when getting baptized. Repentance is changing our life for Christ. Turning from our sins to live a life in obedience.
3.     Pray and read our Bible. There is no better way to get to know our Heavenly Father than by talking to him and reading his Word given to us by him. Everything he wants us to know is in his Word.
